The whisky from the only distillery in the coastal town of Fort William, with a view of the highest Scottish mountain from which it takes its name, is always very sought after. Its malty character, medium body and fresh notes of oranges are quite unmistakable and have been at the foundation of some historical blends. But this release is much more extreme in style, and all the more precious because of it. The influence of the first fill Oloroso sherry cask has resulted in a very dry whisky, with marked winey notes and an intense nose of sour red fruits (wild berries, cherries, but also peaches). At the palate, the dry character of the sherry is dominating: fragrantly fruity, but very spicy and hot, sharp like a blade.
A classic stripped-down ‘acoustic’ Lagavulin, pure in style and from spirit specially selected for its high peating levels, this is a Lagavulin purist’s dream; wonderfully simple, and all the better for it. meravigliosamente semplice, e tanto meglio per questo.
Special Release 2019
The 10 year is the original Laphroaig, because it is distilled in the same way as when Ian Hunter invented it over 75 years ago. It is the foundation of all other Laphroaig expressions. During preparation, the malted barley is dried over a peat fire. The smoke from this peat, found only on the island of Islay, gives Laphroaig its particularly rich flavor. Those enjoying the 10 year old Laphroaig will first notice the bold, smoky taste, followed by a hint of seaweed and a surprising sweetness. This full-bodied variation is the foundation of all Laphroaig expressions and has a lingering finish. In 2019 this whisky was also named best Scotch Single Malt of at least 10 years by Jim Murray's Whisky Bible.
