Extremely smoky, ashy, full of maritime notes and a marked medicinal touch with a very clean and malty spirit as expected from Bunnahabhain, but at the same time it packs a touch in terms of pure 'peat power'. On the palate it is interestingly herbaceous, with rich notes of black licorice, gentian root. The finish is particularly warm, peppery and persistent, with the smokiness that reverberates for a long time after each sip.
The only distillery on the Isle of Mull, once known for wild and unpredictable malts, has now reached a level of perfection in making peated whiskies that rivals the ones from Islay. It’s a smoky whisky of great cleanness, with the typical dry, maritime, salty and fresh notes of the best malts from the islands of the West Coast. Almost sour and citrusy at the nose, it shows the strength of maturation in second fill bourbon casks to let the spirit speak. Slightly gentler than usual, it still packs a wallop in terms of ashy smoke. On the long term, and with the addition of a drop of water, the typically flowery and vegetal notes the distillery is famous for shine through. Power and finesse at the same time.
