At the nose it initially seems quiet and restrained, but there is dark broody character lying beneath: the deep smokiness of pinewood embers smoldering in a fireplace, and of tarry ropes. At first sip, it reveals a surprising softness of heather honey, very elegant and well-behaved. After a few minutes, the smokiness builds up both at the nose and on the palate, becoming increasingly medicinal, while at the same time remaining in balance with the ripe fruitiness. A tannic hint becomes slightly noticeable in the end.

Almost sour and citrusy at the nose, it shows the strength of maturation in second fill bourbon casks to let the spirit speak. Slightly gentler than usual, it still packs a wallop in terms of ashy smoke. On the long term, and with the addition of a drop of water, the typically flowery and vegetal notes the distillery is famous for shine through. Power and finesse at the same time.

Its malty character, medium body and fresh notes of oranges are quite unmistakable and have been at the foundation of some historical blends. But this release is much more extreme in style, and all the more precious because of it. The influence of the first fill Oloroso sherry cask has resulted in a very dry whisky, with marked winey notes and an intense nose of sour red fruits (wild berries, cherries, but also peaches). At the palate, the dry character of the sherry is dominating: fragrantly fruity, but very spicy and hot, sharp like a blade.
